Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, located in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China (Tibet).

Mount Everest

Discovery: Mount Everest was first surveyed and named in 1856 by the British Surveyor General of India, Sir George Everest, though it was known by different names in Nepal and Tibet.

Early Expeditions: Early attempts to reach the summit began in the early 20th century, with British expeditions in the 1920s and 1930s. These expeditions faced significant challenges and fatalities.

First Successful Ascent: Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.

Modern Climbing: Since then, climbing Mount Everest has become a popular but highly challenging endeavor. Many climbers from various countries attempt the summit each year, and the number of ascents has increased significantly.

Environmental Concerns: In recent years, there has been growing concern about the environmental impact of climbers on the mountain, including issues related to litter and the effects of climate change on the region.

Tragedies: Mount Everest has also seen tragic events, including avalanches and accidents. The 1996 Mount Everest disaster, as described in Jon Krakauer’s book “Into Thin Air,” is one of the most well known incidents.

Regulations: Both Nepal and China have imposed various regulations to manage climbing on Everest, including permit fees, health checks, and rules to reduce overcrowding.

Mount Everest continues to be a symbol of human endurance and exploration, drawing climbers and adventurers from around the world
